The aim of this thesis is the development of a prototype application for the Android platform that makes use of augmented reality and NFC technology, to assist patients with the proper implementation of medication. Via augmented reality (AR), the application guides the user through his mobile phone camera to identify and select the right drug package of the medication he will have to take at a given time, according to his treatment plan, from a number of other drug packages within the camera’s field of view. If NFC technology is to be used, NFC tags are placed in advance on the drug package either by the user himself or a health professional, so that the user will be able to detect the appropriate drug package by scanning it with a mobile phone embodied NFC reader and having the name of each drug displayed on the mobile phone screen.
